American submarine L-1 at Bantry Bay, Ireland, 1918. (US Naval History and Heritage Command)

The new policy did not stop one German U-boat ace Kapitanleutnant Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere from achieving a record that has yet to be surpassed by any submarine commander. Surfacing and giving warning, de la Periere, in command of U-35,sank nearly all of his targets with his 88mm deck gun, and only fired torpedoes four times – missing once – to sink a record 194 ships, or 454,000 tons of shipping. In all, by war’s end, German and Austrian submarines had sunk a total of 325 ships in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas.14
